I’m relaxed as I lounge back in our booth. I’ve lost count of the glasses of whiskey I’ve consumed tonight, and the liquor no longer burns when I swallow it down. I wouldn’t say I’m drunk; it’s more like I’m in that sweet spot, where I don’t have a worry in the world and I’m enjoying every moment of this night. But I still have my wits about me.

The place is dark, and it smells like baby oil and cheap perfume. Britney Spears’s “I’m a Slave 4 U” pulses from the speakers as four women dance in little to no clothing on various stages with a dozen others circulating the rowdy, mostly male crowd. This is our third stop on the bachelor tour tonight—and likely our last. We’re in a booth at The Hustler Club, a strip joint not far from our hotel.

“You have to let me buy you a lap dance,” Lucas insists, fisting a handful of dollar bills.

“I don’t have to do anything,” Jude counters, his tone leaving little room for argument.

Ryan and I snicker beside them as we watch them argue. Lucas has been trying to bully Jude into random shit all night. First, he tried forcing our friend to take blow-job shots off random women’s bodies when we were at a bar earlier, among other ridiculous things. Jude said he wasn’t drinking that “girlie shit”—a direct quote—and he wasn’t touching a woman other than Sophie. Now, Lucas is insisting on buying Jude a lap dance. But if anyone knows Jude—and I know him well at this point—they’d know he’s not one to be pushed into anything.

“Look,” Jude says, his voice steely and his eyes matching his tone. “I let you drag me to this place. Against my will, I might add. But I don’t need some random naked chick rubbing up on me tonight. I’m not going back to my room, smelling like baby powder and perfume.”

I take a sip from the glass of liquor in my hand and chuckle.

“Why don’t we buy you a dance, Luc?” Ryan suggests, siding with his cousin.

Lucas scoffs. “No way. If Grace finds out, she’ll kick me out of our room tonight.”

Jude points at him. “Exactly. Which is why I’m not touching one of these girls either.”

The furrow along Lucas’s forehead says he hasn’t given up yet. “But it’s your bachelor party. You’re supposed to do stupid shit like this. It’s your last chance.”

“Says who?”

He shrugs. “I don’t know. Says every male who’s ever had a bachelor party.”

“Well, if you haven’t noticed, Luc, I’m not really a follow-the-leader kind of guy.”

Ryan nods in agreement. I smirk again. I knew Lucas was going to lose this argument from the minute it began. But it’s been fun, watching it happen.

“Fine.” Lucas runs a hand down his face in frustration. “At least have another shot.”

“I’ll agree to that,” Jude acquiesces.

Lucas raises his hand to get the waitress’s attention as the music shifts to Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me.” A few minutes later, she returns with a tray full of shot glasses, brimming with alcohol.
